Hebrides Ensemble
The Hebrides Ensemble has built a reputation as Scotland’s foremost chamber group. The Ensemble has premiered new works by more than forty composers including John Bevan Baker whose works are celebrated on their debut album on Linn Records.
Hebrides Ensemble
The Hebrides Ensemble has built a reputation as Scotland's foremost chamber group, touring frequently throughout Scotland, appearing at international music festivals and broadcasting regularly on BBC Radio 3.
The Ensemble has commissioned and premiered new works by more than forty composers including Nigel Osborne, Sally Beamish, Stuart MacRae and Gordon McPherson and performs a celebrated series of concerts each year at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama.
The 2005/06 season includes the Ensemble's second Scottish Arts Council Tune Up Tour and a major new mixed media commission, "Shoreline...Stories of Love and War" from composer Nigel Osborne and film maker / animator Rachel Bevan Baker in collaboration with Opera Circus and Scottish Dance Theatre. Hebrides Ensemble received high critical acclaim for their outstanding performance of the music of Elliott Carter at the 2005 Edinburgh International Festival.
William Conway combines both cello playing and conducting in a busy and varied career. As well as his extensive chamber music work he was principal cello with Scottish Chamber Orchestra for ten years and presently holds the same position with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe. He conducts orchestras worldwide in repertoire ranging from small scale contemporary to symphonic orchestral work including opera.
Catherine Marwood has a varied career as chamber musician, soloist and principal violist. She was a member of the Fairfield Quartet, the Marwood Ensemble and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and is currently principal viola in the Scottish Ensemble. Solo appearances include BBC National Orchestra of Wales and the SCO and she is currently much in demand with chamber groups and orchestras around the country.
Philip Moore has performed as a soloist, piano duettist (with Simon Crawford-Phillips) and chamber musician in America, the Far East, Africa, throughout Europe and at all of the major UK venues. As a concerto soloist he has appeared with orchestras including the Philharmonia, BBC Scottish Symphony, the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields and the Royal Philharmonic.
Alexander Janiczek was born in Salzburg, studied at the Salzburg Mozarteum and developed a close association with Sandor Vègh and the Camerata Salzburg. He records with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and Chamber Orchestra of Europe and is also a director and soloist across Europe. Alexander has appeared with artists such as Christian Zacharias, Emmanuel Krivine, Ton Koopman, Murray Perahia and Llyr Williams. Alexander Janiczek plays the Baron Oppenheim Stradivarius from 1716, which is on loan to him from the National Bank of Austria.
Sarah Bevan Baker grew up in Scotland and studied violin at the Royal College of Music where she gained an ARCM, DipRCM and won the Leonard Hirsch Prize. As well as her chamber music playing she has been a member of the Chamber Orchestra of Europe and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and is also a keen baroque violinist.
Rosemary Eliot was born in Dundee and educated at St Leonards School, St Andrews. She studied flute at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, under Peter Lloyd, and was the first British flautist to be accepted for the European Community Youth Orchestra. She subsequently studied at the Paris Conservatoire with Alain Marion. Upon returning to Britain Rosemary became the Principal flute with the BBCSSO - a post she currently holds.
Spanish clarinettist Maximiliano Martín was born in Tenerife and studied in Barcelona and later at the Royal College of Music in London. After being appointed Principal Clarinet of the SCO and winning the Young Artists Platform Competition, Martín has since made debuts at the Wigmore Hall London, Queens Hall Edinburgh, Palau de la Musica Catalana and Teatro Monumental in Madrid. As a soloist Martín has performed all the major concertos with orchestras such as SCO, EUCO and the OST. His debut album "Fantasia" and recording of the Mozart Clarinet Concerto with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra were released on Linn Records in 2006 and met with great critical acclaim.
Consort of Voices
Based in Edinburgh and founded in 1991, the Consort of Voices specialises in performances of a cappella music and small-scale choral repertoire from the 15th century to the present day. The group performs regularly throughout Scotland and made its English debut at the Ryedale Festival in Yorkshire in 1996 under the direction of William Conway.
The Consort has been closely associated for many years with the music of John Bevan Baker, and participated in the first performances of his chamber opera The Seer. They first performed Songs of Courtship and Hymn for the Nativity at a memorial concert for the composer at the Queen's Hall, Edinburgh, in 1995.
