Classical Opera Company
The Classical Opera Company was founded in 1997 by conductor Ian Page. It specialises in the music of Mozart and his contemporaries, performing with its own period-instrument orchestra, and is emerging as one of Britain's most exciting and highly regarded young arts organisations. It has attracted considerable critical and public acclaim, not only for the high quality of its performances but also for its imaginative programming and its ability to discover and nurture outstanding young singers.
It has mounted staged productions of Mozart's Apollo et Hyacinthus (1998 and 2006), La finta semplice (2000), Il re pastore (2001), Grabmusik and Bastien und Bastienne (2002), Così fan tutte (2006), Die Schuldigkeit des ersten Gebots and Le nozze di Figaro (2007), and Mitridate, re di Ponto (2009). In addition it has presented concert performances of Mozart's Mitridate, re di Ponto (world premiere of the ‘original' version), Lucio Silla and Ascanio in Alba, Thomas Arne's Artaxerxes, J.C.Bach's Adriano in Siria and Gluck's La clemenza di Tito (UK premiere). It also presents highly original and popular themed concerts, which have ranged from intimate Lieder recitals (Kings Place) to full orchestral programmes combining opera and poetry (Barbican).
In 2000 it was the first outside company to be invited to appear at the Royal Opera's Linbury Studio Theatre, and it now appears regularly in London at such venues as Sadler's Wells (Così fan tutte, Le nozze di Figaro and Mitridate), the Barbican (The A-Z of Mozart Opera, Il re pastore, and The Truth About Love) and Wigmore Hall (a highly-acclaimed series of Mozart travelogue concerts, an equally successful Haydn series, and an ongoing series of composer retrospectives, the most recent of which, a retrospective of Gluck, was recorded for Wigmore Hall Live). The company has also performed at such venues and festivals as Bridgewater Hall, Manchester, The Anvil, Basingstoke, St George's, Bristol, the Schwetzingen Rokokotheater, the Barbican's Mostly Mozart Festival, the Lufthansa Baroque Festival, the Bath International Music Festival, the Brighton Festival and the Buxton Festival, and has appeared twice as ensemble-in-residence at Martin Randall Travel's Mozart in the Marches Festival in Italy. It has twice been nominated for the Manchester Evening News Theatre Awards.
The Classical Opera Company has established an outstanding track-record for its work in discovering and developing world-class young artists, with over half of the singers from its main productions quickly going on to make debuts at Glyndebourne or Covent Garden. Artists who have worked with the company at the outset of their careers include Emma Bell, Cora Burggraaf, Lucy Crowe, Klara Ek, Sarah Fox, Ashley Holland, Jacques Imbrailo, Darren Jeffrey, Gillian Keith, Andrew Kennedy, Sally Matthews, Robert Murray and Lawrence Zazzo, and such established artists as Rebecca Evans, Gerald Finley, Susan Gritton, Philip Langridge, Mark Padmore, Joan Rodgers and Amanda Roocroft have also appeared with the company, as have numerous actors, including Simon Russell Beale, Barbara Flynn, Alex Jennings, Michael Maloney, Bill Nighy, Janet Suzman and Sam West.
In 2006 the company launched its Associate Artist scheme with four inaugural artists - sopranos Rebecca Bottone, Martene Grimson and Anna Leese and tenor Andrew Staples - three of whom are now singing regularly at the Royal Opera House, and recent Associate Artists include sopranos Sophie Bevan, Kishani Jayasinghe and Rebecca Ryan, and tenors Allan Clayton and Ben Johnson, all of whom are already attracting the attention of major opera houses in the UK and internationally.
The Classical Opera Company's debut recording, The A-Z of Mozart Opera, was released internationally on Sony BMG in 2007 to widespread critical acclaim. Recent engagements have included three residencies at Kings Place, focusing on the works of Mozart, Haydn and Handel respectively, and in autumn 2009 the company was invited to work with the Royal Opera on its new production of Thomas Arne's Artaxerxes. This was followed by a studio recording of the opera, which will be released on Linn Records in January 2011.
