Love at First Tequila
In a bar behind the all-night, there's a girl in silver heels, there's a juke-box playing 'Up Tight' and a scally selling wheels. She brushes up against the boy like a puppy dog in Spring, he turns to her, he loves her lips, her tattoos and her ring. Here's a pound towards the next drink, here's a diamond for your ear, here's to what the other girls think, will you dance me out of here? Here's a kiss to last till later, here's a number on your palm, here's a "later, alligator" in blue ink across my arm. Lady Luck seems to be waltzing with the dealer, but it's love at first tequila. She crawls the streets of Camden like a lizard stalks a rock, chasing all the gigs, her pride is under key and lock. She sings to feed her babies, hand to mouth and mile to mile. But when she sings 'Perdido', they'll be dancing in the aisle. Back down the Black Gardenia, shiny horn tied in a sack, braving "no's" and "maybe's", keeping face from crock and crack. His family is on the far side of the wrong side of the tracks, keeping out the hungry wolves, here's a slammer to relax. Here's a pound towards the next drink, here's a diamond for your ear, here's to what the other girls think, will you dance me out of here? Here's a kiss to last till later, here's a number on your palm, here's a "later, alligator" take my lovin', take my arm. Lady Luck seems to be waltzing with the dealer, but it's love at first tequila. They climb the stairs up to the skylight where the city's sound asleep. They make love to moon and starlight and the secret's theirs to keep. She doesn't want this one to end so she pins him to the floor. She shows the boy the sharp end of a knife she's used before.
Lifejacket
Don't throw me a lifejacket to keep me afloat. Don't give me whistles
and flares to safeguard this boat. But let me dive right into an emerald
sea and watch me scramble ashore, the sirens sing off key. I hope that
you'll agree, I steered so carefully, a lifejacket isn't for me. So now I
am older than ever I wanted to be. I tried wise and clever, I'm tall
like a tree. But swimming further away from my memory, I'm going to find
an island in an ancient sea. I'll always win hands down, I always was
class clown. A lifejacket won't keep me down. Should you feel the need
to tell me. Should you be so cruel to care. If you think I'm done, God
help me. I'll be here, you'll be there. Don't give me a lifejacket to
keep head above. Don't throw me torches and ropes to guide me to love.
Just let me fall overboard and let my body float. And when the sun is
up, I'll find another boat. I'll greet the fine new day with nothing
much to say. A lifejacket won't keep me away. Should you haul me in to
help me, say my days are running spare, should you feel the need to tell
me that you care how I fare. Watch me while I hold my breath to
see what's left.
She's Loaded
She gets out of bed, there's a boy in her head, she can't shake him. With ribbons in boxes and letters in drawers, they can't take him. The word from above gets all tangled up with love, she can't prove it. A month is a year and a year is a life, so don't lose it. Do you remember the days when summer stretched like canvas, wine poured out like blood? Do you remember the girl in your arms, did you love her like a lover should? If the champagne is poured and her key's in the door. And the towels folded. She's loaded. She peels off her clothes like the petals of a rose, he won't hold her. Oh, whatever she said made a bump in his head, someone told her. And now he's away and she drinks in the day like her sister. Somebody saw him alone in the park, he said he missed her. Do you remember the days when summer stretched like canvas, wine poured out like blood? Do you remember the girl in your arms, did you love her like a lover should? If the champagne is poured and her key's in the door. And the towels folded. She's loaded. She can stay up till the bottles rattle and the children climb the hill. She can hang out with the kids she knows without her fizz and pill. Oh, Valerie's waiting and Ian's inside. So if you remember "I love you" she lied. Tell your next trick, it's sure to amuse. She's loaded with nothing to lose. Do you remember the days when summer stretched like canvas, wine poured out like blood? Do you remember the girl in your arms, did you love her like a lover should? If the champagne is poured and her key's in the door. And the towels folded. She's loaded. She's moved to the coast with the vaguest of hopes. It's an outrage, it's an outrage.
A Good and Simple Man
Box brownie, black and white, boy soldier misses his girl. Switch on the Xmas lights, let the branches unfurl. © Tall stories, bloody knees, kicking up shingle and cans. Tears fell on piano keys, broken chords, cross hands. You showed me all the chords you played, the notes you blew, the bricks you laid. These days I have a master plan, to be like you in all I can. A good and simple man. I'm sorry for lots of things; I'm guilty for many more. Can you still hear me sing? Come on, I'm really shaking the floor. A silver mouthpiece, watch and shirt. Binoculars, safe in their case. Your old lady hides the hurt but we've seen the stains on her face. You showed me all the chords you played, the notes you blew, the bricks you laid. These days I have a master plan, to be like you in all I can. A good and simple man. Don't shout at them, they don't know what they're saying. Listen to the band, don't pretend, start playing. Three years and eighty-five days, the river tried to swallow me down. The sky brought a heavy rain, you brought me to this muddy old town. Box brownie, black and white, boy soldier misses his girl. So switch off the Xmas lights, let the branches unfurl. You told me all the quicker ways. The roads are up, it's different these days. These days I have a master plan, to be like you in all I can. A good and simple man. A good and simple man.
Glue
Shake out your silver, kick up your heels, you can get what you need if you carp and plead like a wheeler hawking deals. You'll find a reason, you'll find a cure, of all that I am confident of a world full of little else I'm sure. I crave independence, I walk like a warrior, sing like a nation counting score. I love when I'm loved, but I carry the torch for any old dope who wants me more. I'm stuck to you like glue. I am adhesive and only cohesive will do. Do you want to be stuck to me too? Roll out the red pile, load up the flash, here's your 15 of fame in the fake-it game, can you make mine ready cash? Show me some silver, kick up your heels, you can get what you need if you carp and plead like a wheeler hawking deals. I crave independence, I walk like a warrior, I sing like a nation counting score. I love when I'm loved, but I carry the torch for any old dope who wants me more. I'm stuck to you like glue. I am adhesive and only cohesive will do. Do you want to be stuck to me? Who needs a different kind of love, when all you get to give's a cold exchange? Who knows a different kind of need when every kiss is kissed away at closer range? No snakes for this charmer, pinky rings and fast cars, shiny things and kiss ass. Shame on me! No fuel for my turbo, just slammer drinks and hard cash, open tops and bar flash. Can't you see that I'm still stuck to you like glue. I am adhesive and only cohesive will do. Do you want to be stuck to me too?
Forty-two
I've lied to save face, I've settled some scores. I've cried to show grace, I've cried on all fours. I've travelled to love, I've righted some wrong. I've kept head above and I've copied the strong. A whisky in your cup, a vodka in mine. We won't wake the house up, we'll talk until nine. (Then we'll) dive into town like the desperate two. Older not wiser, let's stay forty-two. © My intentions are good, I do the best that I can. Well I've tried to be faithful, 'cause I love my old man. We cover our secrets with a drink and a smile. And I've held tiny fingers, the child of a child. A whisky in your cup, a vodka in mine. We won't wake the house up, we'll talk until nine. (Then we'll) dive into town like the desperate two. Older not wiser, let's stay forty-two. I've told you a big one, you'll promise you'll keep. Oh, they're closing this bar, I don't talk in my sleep. My house is a mess, I've been drinking alone. I'd better dust off a dress, switch off the phone. We'll have one at Dean's like we used to do and we'll toast the old queens who won't see forty-two. So call when you're free, let's make that a rule. You would have done it for me, you old bluffer, you old fool. A whisky in your cup, a vodka in mine. We won't wake the house up, we'll talk until nine. (Then we'll) dive into town like the desperate two. Older not wiser, older not wiser, let's stay forty-two.
Northop Road
Long ago, when the world was made of wishes and our hopeful hearts climbed up to the top of old Northop Road we counted stars and put them in a puppet show, cotton thread and ruby red for when the music starts a dark hymn for the kids of old Northop Road. Come inside. Take your seats - don't be alarmed. Just like Hollywood, what a movie. We did what we could. Long ago, when the snow came down and choked the cars on Northop Road, bring back the old stories we used to read in comic books. Starting once upon a time, and a thousand steps, a million eyes away from here. Here where the old city has moulded me, clay to clay. Take your seats - don't be alarmed. This bar, these nights. This fool fights the good fight. This bar, these nights. This fool fights the good fight. This bar, these nights. This fool fights the good fight.
Pamela
Whatever happened to thinking our folks were going slightly mad? And did they notice you crying at Christmas, God you hurt so bad. And would they understand how our tiny souls could move in different ways? Oh Pamela, those weren't the days. Whatever happened to Graham? Does he still have stupid orange hair? And Rosy the Fox? Do you talk to her like she's always there? And did you realise how our hearts grew hopeful in so many ways? Oh Pamela, those weren't the days. And would you be scared if I told you that I missed you? How my hands made fists when that father figure kissed you. And do you remember the laughing clown? You hid your sweets under the eiderdown. Oh Pamela, let's take this town. Whatever happened to falling asleep in a car by a lake? I think I really knew you hated the candles on the birthday cake. I found love in a city that pushed us further apart. Oh Pamela, who stills your beating heart? Another lover came around late last year. Stayed 'round long enough for my love to disappear. I wish you well in everything you do. I know that some babe's gonna get the best of you. Putting gold in a bucket, my sister and me. Counting Moviegoer tickets for Fortune and Flea. Pit the pony stays hungry 'cos Stan's gone to bed. Rockabye little devil, lay down your sweet head. Our theatre, the willow, Sharon, Carol and Deb. Tangled up like a dragonfly caught in a web. His arms were the branches, his body the trunk, we could hide under the cotton, beating feather and funk. Oh Pamela, let's get drunk. What's going to happen to knives and swords if we only stab and wield? What's the use of the gilded cage if the bird's never freed? And what's point of shiny boots if you tread on crippled toes? Oh Pamela, that's how it goes. Whatever happened to looking for ghosts high up on Denbigh Moor? If only we knew those ghosts would keep coming back for more. And now my love is marked by kisses at the Bye-Bye Bar. Oh Pamela, I've come this far. Oh Pamela, I've come this far. Oh Pamela, this far.
I Want to Live in Paris
I want to live in Paris so we can go Boulevard and Cabaret, hole up in a bar. I want to live in Paris and watch the English take a holiday but always from afar. Stucco beautiful, smack bang centre, that's my palace when I'm rich. We'll go Parnasse, out to Picardy, tall as sunflowers, ride or hitch. So come with me to Paris, so I can be ageless and a little bad, blameless in our Paris pad, away from all futility - do you want to live with me? I'll take my love to Paris. I will be sweeter than a dry champagne, a cliché in your glass. We'll live above old Paris and when our rooftop is all wet with rain, we'll let it pass. My friend Pete's got just what I need, one big room right next to Nord. There's a bar where he writes music and takes pastis like it's the law. So come with me to Paris, so I can be ageless and a little bad, shameless in our Paris pad, away from all futility - do you want to live with me? I want to live in Paris so we can go Boulevard and Cabaret, hole up in a bar. I want to live in Paris and watch the English take a holiday but always from afar. We'll watch for freaks in Café Opéra, we'll make love in old "Monty-Martre". We'll pretend that we speak parlez-vous - Brel, Piaf, dear old Jean-Paul Sartre. I'll grow a beard in Paris. I'll be a poet, I'll be a little sad, blameless in our Paris pad. We'll talk just like lovers talk. Or shall we move to New York?
Hiraeth
Somewhere in a time forgotten, dreams won't let you run away. You call them back to you today. You say that dreams are for those who sleep like I'm sleeping here. The footfalls light as snow that drifts like waves upon the sea, they mark my reverie. Hiraeth means to long for places where you used to be. Castles, shores and unlocked doors: a way to hold my tiny mind alive until hiraeth keeps me still. Once alone I carve my name into a tree, then I run away. The city is my tree today. Over years and schemes and tears, I had no guide, no plan. This big city makes it easier to do what I can, it turns the boy to man. Hiraeth means to long for places where you used to be. Castles, shores and unlocked doors: a way to hold my tiny mind alive until hiraeth keeps me still. Here it comes again, the daylight grey, a dark and teary dream. The words you say you really mean. Over years and schemes and tears, I had no guide, no plan. But this big city makes it easier to do what I can, to turn the boy to man. I do what I can, to turn the boy to man.
My Safest Place
You're my safest place when all the other places fail to keep me safe from the war that wages and warns me. You sheltered me and showed me time and grace. I heard that tongues were wagging, fingers pointing. When summer is over there is a winter to warm you, to keep you close. And I want to shine in all your worlds, you are the brightest star. You always change the sand to pearls wherever you are. I've found my safest place, a quiet place where all my old time demons melt into nothing, fade like a season, then you renew me. There's nothing to deface. This is a canvas, blank, to paint our love on. Proud as a tower, bold as graffitti. We sailed a stormy sea and the rain lashed down like knives. Let's keep the blades real sharp. So, if our days are fours and fives, there goes my heart. Here's my safest place, safer than information, mountain shelter, solace and prayers of any religion, I hold you close. I turn to hide my face. This kind of bliss should carry endless warnings. The bigger the love, the smallest suspicion, I left the rest behind. And I hope you're safe in mine. Let love be a sanctuary. This is an exile locked in time. I'll throw out the key.
Letter from a Dead Soldier
Tales of hope fall down like bowling pins. Each New Year's Day begins like another little war. A year ago he held you to the sky, new born, a lullaby, he kept you from everything he saw. And if they dig under the April snow, a father's letter tells you all you need to know. I'm sorry but I didn't have the time to tell you or the words that you would understand. But as you grow, you'll surely know the world we borrowed from you was so carefully planned. Precious time counting a nursery rhyme, soldiers all dance in time to a drum without a skin. Sweet child of mine, born fearless, love divine, next to the firing line. Inform kith and kin. And say it loud enough for what it's worth or whisper hymns that wish you love and peace on earth. I'm sorry if the hands that held you to the sunlight are the hands that killed for oil again. I'm sorry that the bullets from the wicked west came down on you instead of rain.
